Teen singing sensation Donel Mangena is set to become an ambassador for Southampton Children’s Hospital.
The city-based 16-year-old, who was runner-up in The Voice UK 2018, will be unveiled at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust’s open day on Saturday, 8 September.
He will open the event alongside Radio Lollipop and perform his debut single Bang Like a Drum before taking in some of the day’s events and activities and meeting visitors.
Donel, who developed his skills in a small studio at his family home in Woolston, became a national hit after storming his way to the final of the ITV show under the guidance of mentor Will.i.am and was signed by Polydor Records shortly after.
He later performed for the Queen at the request of Prince Harry before releasing his first single, which features rising London rapper Swarmz.
“I am absolutely honoured to become an ambassador for Southampton Children’s Hospital and help to highlight some of the amazing work that goes on there for young patients,” said Donel.
“I visited recently to meet patients and staff and it was so nice to see the great atmosphere on the wards and the positivity among everyone – I knew immediately I wanted to be involved further.”
Southampton Children’s Hospital is the sixth-largest children’s hospital in the country and one of only four which provides all specialist services on one site. It treats 150,000 children every year from across the UK.
“We are extremely excited and grateful to have Donel’s support and look forward to working with him in his ambassadorial role, as well as giving our support to him in return as he progresses his career in the music industry,” said Louisa Green, matron at Southampton Children’s Hospital.
“His impact was clear to see during his recent visit to us, with so many happy faces among patients and staff and we are so pleased his future visits to us will be in his capacity as an honorary member of our team.”
The UHS open day will take place at Southampton General Hospital on Saturday, 8 September from 10.30am to 3.30pm, with free parking available for all visitors.
